Composite and PVC Decking
By Mike MacCune, General Manager
With the growth in popularity of outdoor living and as homeowner’s needs and desires to update, expand, and build new decks has exploded, so has the many offerings that are now available when choosing decking. As the choices in composite and PVC products have multiplied it has become increasingly difficult to stay abreast of the changes and offerings.
The original composites, which are a combination of wood fiber and recycled plastic evolved into good-looking products designed to provide low maintenance. Although these performed well in that they did not rot, split, or check, because of the wood fiber they could scratch, stain, or promote mold and mildew. The industry next developed an all PVC decking product that would be resistant to scratching, staining, mold, and mildew. The early ones looked like plastic but again evolved into realistic looking decking. These PVC products are somewhat expensive and lack the strength of the composites. Our experience shows they should be installed on framing that is

This year Fiberon introduced a new line of decking called Horizons. It is a composite wrapped with PVC. They have combined the benefits of the strength and affordability of the composites with the scratch, stain, and mold and mildew resistance of the PVC’s. We stock three colors; Slate, Rosewood, and Ipe with an additional three colors available special order.
Hingham Lumber continues to carry and sell the Fiberon Professional Series composite and the Gossen Passport all PVC decking, as they remain popular.
We sell all products in this category in 12’, 16’, and 20’ lengths, pre-grooved for a hidden fastener system. We also stock one length of non –grooved in each offering so that you can picture frame the deck and/or do stairs.
Finally, we have recently added the full line of Timbertech decking which is an extensive line of composite, PVC, and PVC wrapped products. Most of them are available with a short two-day lead-time.
All of these products are on display at our store. Ask any salesperson for more information or pricing. As always, Hingham Lumber thanks you for your business!
